Considering having a fuller pout?
Lip fillers are one of the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatments in the UK today. However, they are not for everyone and finding a suitable doctor to carryout your treatment can be the difference between beautiful lips and a botched lip job.
Our Cosmetic Doctor and Dr Abha, an Eye Surgeon and Cosmetic Doctor both from Alpha Med Aesthetics in their Manchester City Centre & Urmston clinics to answer some of the most important questions about lip filler treatments.
1. What Is The Most Important Thing You Should Know Before Getting Your Lip Filler Done?
Dr Abha: We all hear stories about botched lip jobs in the press or from family and friends. Sadly, this is becoming more and more common especially because the lip filler industry is not regulated. This can lead to people having less than satisfactory or less safe treatments by untrained or unhygienic practitioners. I would stress the most important factor to consider is safety. By this I mean ensuring you go to a medical professional to have your treatments done. Medical professionals (doctors and nurses) are regulated because they have to be registered with medical bodies and licensed by them in order to practice. A beautician or aesthetics therapist is not the same as a doctor or nurse.
Dr Abha: Price is not everything! It is vital to know what type of filler is being used by the practitioner. Always, always, always ask to see the bottle/syringe and product leaflet of the product being used. Not all fillers are the same and not all fillers have the same safety standards. Filler prices vary so much due to the quality of the product you are having injected. I have spoken to many patients who have previously opted for less expensive (less safe/tested) brands of filler which have caused adverse reactions. Your face is precious and so is your health, so ensure you only have high quality products injected into your delicate dermis. I only use Juvederm® or Restylane filler products. I believe they are the safest and most effective brands in the UK and US.
2. What Do I Tell the Doctor/Practitioner Before My First Lip Filler Treatment:
Dr Abha: You should always discuss the results you are looking for with the practitioner and you should also let the practitioner know:
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
If you are on medication, in particular aspirin or ibuprofen as they can increase risk of bruising and swelling at the treatment site
If you have a history of excessive scarring (hypertrophic scarring and keloid formations)
If you have any pigmentation disorders
If you are planning any other treatments such as laser treatments, botox or a chemical peel. There is a risk of inflammation if these procedures are performed after treatment.
If you have any skin injury/broken skin on or near the treatment site prior to treatment.
Dr Abha: Your practitioner should complete a full medical history with you. Insist that one is completed and if you confident in the practitioner choose another provider.
3. How do I know I will achieve the results I want?
Dr Abha: Each practitioner has his/her strengths and specialism. Ask to see before and after pictures of previous lip treatments done or ask the doctors if you can speak to a recent client who has had a treatment.
Dr Abha: Everyone's lips are different. What works on a client with bigger lips may not always suit a client with thinner lips. A good cosmetic doctor will carry out an analysis of your face and suggest a dosage and application that is proportional to your features. This helps to ensure the lips look natural yet fuller. Using a skilled cosmetic doctor will also ensure that your lip vermillion border (the lip line) is not breached, avoiding a fake look.
4. How Often Do I Need Maintenance Treatments?
Dr Abha: Treatments can last from 6 to 24 months depending on the dermal filler used, area targeted and each individual client. Discuss the likely frequency of maintenance follow ups with your practitioner at your initial consultation.
5. What If My Treatment Goes Wrong?
Dr Abha: Good quality natural fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm®are made from Hyaluronic Acid (HA). With a skilled medical professional who uses high quality products, there is little risk of any adverse effects. HA based fillers are temporary, so will dissolve naturally over time. If you are unhappy with the results, or if a problem does occur, a good practitioner will also have 'hyaluronidase'. This is an enzyme based injectable eraser which works to dissolve the HA filler almost immediately. There is therefore little risk of ending up with a "trout pout".
Dr Abha: Make sure to check that the practitioner you are using has full medical insurance cover in place. Most non-medical practitioners don't have insurance. If you have an adverse reaction or negligent treatment you may have an issue pursuing the practitioner for a refund or compensation.
